Interview mit Michael Riesenbeck by DJ Bonne, Februar 2004

Shouting Silence gehörte 2003 mit Sicherheit zu den unterbewertetsten Scheiben des Jahres. Nachdem Mastermind und Multitalent Michael Riesenbeck nun endlich einen Plattendeal unter Dach und Fach bringen konnte, wurde es Zeit dem sympathischen Holländer ein paar Fragen zum aktuellen Werk zu stellen…

Michael vorab eine sehr elementare Frage, ich habe gehört, dass die Veröffentlichung von Shouting Silence nun endlich gesichert ist?

MR: Ja. Ich freue mich, dir mitteilen zu können, daß ich einen Vertrag mit Perris Records unterschrieben habe. Sie haben ´Shouting silence´ weltweit am 7.Februar veröffentlicht.

Warum hat es solange gedauert bis  ein Deal zustande kam?

MR: In Wirklichkeit war ich überrascht, wie schnell alles klappte. Als das Album fertig war, habe ich es bei verschiedenen Firmen angeboten. Perris waren halt die Schnellsten, die positiv geantwortet haben. Dann ging es nur noch darum, die CDs zu pressen und die Promo-Aktivitäten zu planen.

An der Qualität des Album kann es doch nicht gelegen haben …?

MR: Danke für das Lob. Ich freue mich, dass das Album überall so gute Reviews bekommen hat. Ich bin sehr stolz auf das Album, und ebenso auf die Leute, die mit mir zusammenarbeiten.

Du hast bei Shouting Silence gleich ein ganzes All Star Team um Dich versammelt, wie ist der Kontakt zu den Musikern wie z.B. Tony O Hara (Praying Mantis) zustande gekommen?

MR: An alle Details kann ich mich gar nicht mehr genau erinnern, aber zu den meisten Musikern kam ich über den Kontakt zu Nick Baldrian. Andere Musiker kontaktierten mich über die bereits am Album beteiligten Kollegen. Wieder andere fragte ich, weil ich sie bereits von früheren Projekten her kannte.

Wäre es nicht einfacher gewesen ein Studioteam und einen Sänger zu engagieren?

MR: Tja, ich wollte mit Leuten arbeiten, die zusätzliche Komponenten einbringen konnten. Zudem sollte das Album sich durch eine große Stilvielfalt auszeichnen. Die Musiker für dieses Unterfangen zu finden war sehr einfach, die Sache mit den Sängern dagegen war nicht ganz so leicht. ´Heart of Stone´ war der letzte Song, für den wir die Vocals aufgenommen haben. Dafür habe ich kurz vor Toreschluß noch diesen jungen brasilianischen Sänger gefunden. Es gab viele Phasen, in denen ich improvisieren musste. Ursprünglich war Kimmo Blom als einziger Sänger für ´Call to glory´ vorgesehen, aber er bekam leider gesundheitliche Probleme. Darum holte ich einen weiteren Sänger dazu und der Song entwickelte sich zu einer Art Duett. Bei ´Heart of Stone´ hat mein alter Kumpel Paul Vincent noch einige Extra-Vocals beigesteuert. Seinen Beitrag schickte er mir im Mp3 Format nur einen Tag vor der letzten Deadline. Phil gehört zu den absolut zuverlässigsten Typen in der Szene. Außerdem war es für ihn eine Premiere, mit MP3 zu arbeiten.

Deine musikalische Ausrichtung auf Shouting Silence liegt im melodischen Rock bis AOR Bereich, Deine bevorzugte Richtung oder möchtest Du Dich hier nicht festlegen?

MR: Ich stehe schon sehr auf Melodic Rock und AOR. Aber ich höre auch jede Menge anderer Musik. Ich liebe die Klassiker wie Toto und Journey, ohne gleichzeitig die Newcomer mit ihren neuen Ideen zu vernachlässigen. Ich höre viel Radio. Dann gibt es Zeiten, in denen ich zur Abwechslung gerne mal eine Blues- oder Tower of Power-Platte auflege. Ich möchte für alle Stile offen sein. Mein nächstes Album wird deshalb bestimmt noch vielfältiger ausfallen, einige Leute würde das als ´reifer´ bezeichnen. Der Titelsong auf ´Shouting Silence´ ist als Hinweis zu verstehen, in welche Richtung ich mich in Zukunft entwickeln möchte.

Wer zeigte sich fürs Songwriting verantwortlich?

MR: Die Sänger haben die Lyrics und die Melodielinien geschrieben, und ich die Musik. ´Dreams for tomorrow´ habe ich zusammen mit Franky v/d Burgt verfasst, der auf der Platte auch Keyboards spielt. ´Two Hearts´ ist der einzige Track auf dem Album, für den ich auch den Text geschrieben habe. Diesen Song singt übrigens Tony O´Hara. Auf der Platte stehen außerdem drei Instrumentals. Ursprünglich waren für diese Songs ebenfalls Vocals vorgesehen. Als aber schließlich die Instrumente eingespielt waren, merkte ich plötzlich, dass es der Texte überhaupt nicht bedurfte. Weil Texte die instrumentale Stärke überdeckt hätten, habe ich sie einfach gleich weggelassen. Besonders stolz bin ich auf ´Toto´s giant journey´, weil in diesem Song musikalisch so unglaublich viel passiert. Zudem sind Musiker auf diesem Song einfach phantastisch.  

Michael erzähl uns doch was zu Deinem musikalischen Werdegang?

MR: Ich habe schon ziemlich viel gemacht. In verschiedenen Bands habe ich Schlagzeug und Gitarre gespielt. Bei den Aufnahmen zu ´Fanfields´, dem Toto Tribute-Album, kam ich in Kontakt zu einigen Leuten, die dann später auf ´Shouting Silence´ mitgespielt haben. Als Gegenleistung habe ich folgerichtig auch auf deren Platten mitgespielt. Außerdem habe ich bei Werbe-Songs mitgewirkt. Ich spiele zusätzlich Drums in einer Band mit Namen ´Art.461´, die unglaublich groovt. Gerade nehmen wir unser drittes Album auf. Die Musik ist nicht AOR in Reinkultur. Es ist eine Mixtur aus Rock, Funk, Blues, Soul und Pop. Die Songs sind alle wunderschön geworden

Wird es eine Art Promotour geben?

MR: Nein. Um das Feeling der Platte live rüberzubringen, müßte ich mit den Original-Musikern auftreten, und das wird leider wohl nicht klappen. (Hey Tom von Perris Records, wenn du das hier gerade lesen solltest ...)

Michael was kommt nach Shouting Silence, vielleicht wieder ein All Star Projekt?

MR: Diese Frage bekomme ich in letzter Zeit öfter gestellt, aber ich kann das gut nachvollziehen. Jetzt will ich aber erstmal ´Shouting Silence´ promoten. Sicherlich wird es danach ein zweites Album geben. Ich habe verschiedene Optionen zur Auswahl. Ich beteilige mich als Musiker am neuen Lec Zorn Album. Auch würde ich gerne ein zweites ´Fanfields´ Album produzieren. Ich könnte auch verstärkt als Session-Musiker arbeiten oder mehr Live-Gigs spielen. Es gibt halt so viele Möglichkeiten. Darum ist es so schwer, sich für eine Sache zu entscheiden. Einige Leute hätten mich gerne in ihrer Band oder würden gerne mit mir eine neue Band gründen. Vielleicht entwickelt es sich ja in diese Richtung. Danke für das Interesse an meiner Musik, und hoffentlich werden viele Leser ´Shouting Silence´ ein Ohr gönnen. 



English Version

Shouting Silence was one of those releases in 2003 that didn´t get the recognition they deserved. After the multitalented mastermind Michael Riesenbeck finally signed a record deal, it was about time to ask this sympathetic musician some questions.

First of all a question in general. I´ve heard that the release of Shouting Silence is now ensured. Is that true?

MR: Yes. I’m proud to be able to tell you that I have been signed to Perris Records which released Shouting Silence worldwide on February, 3rd!

Why did it take such a long time to get this record deal?

MR: Actually, I was surprised at how quickly it happened. Once the album was done I sent it to a number of labels and Perris got back to me quickly. After that it was a matter of printing the CD’s and such and preparing the promotion activities,

The quality of the record can´t be the reason behind it, that´s for sure.

MR: Thank you! I’m glad the album has gotten good reviews just about everywhere. I’m extremely proud of the album and of the people who agreed to work with me on it.

There was an Allstar Team involved in the recording of Shouting Silence. How did you get in contact with musicians like e.g. Tony O Hara?

MR: I can’t recall it for everyone but most of the musicians I got in touch with through Nick Baldrian. Others contacted me because they knew other people who were already on the album, some I asked because I knew them from previous bands and projects.

Wouldn´t it be much easier to take studio musicians and a singer?

MR: Well… I wanted to work with people of which I knew would add something to the mix. Also, I wanted to work with a lot of different musicians and singers to make the album as diverse as possible. Finding the musicians was easy, finding suitable singers was another story. The last song we cut vocals for was Heart of Stone and I found this great young Brazilian singer only days before the deadline. I had to improvise too. Kimmo Blom was supposed to be the only singer on “Call to Glory” but he has some health issues, that’s why I brought in a second singer so the song ended up being a kind of duet. On Heart of Stone my long time buddy Phil Vincent does some extra vocals and he emailed me his parts in mp3 format like a day before the deadline. Phil is the most amazing, reliable guy around, This was his first time doing vocals using mp3 I think.

Your musical direction is very much Melodic Rock/AOR. Is this the kind of music you personally prefer?

MR: Basically, yes. But I do listen to a lot of different types of music. I still listen to the classics like Toto and Journey, but there’s also some cool new bands which play with a more contemporary twist which I like. I listen to the radio a lot, but every now and then I put on an old blues or Tower of Power record. I try to be as openminded as possible. I think that my next album will be a little more diverse style-wise, more mature some people would say ྶ I think that the last song on Shouting Silence, which is the title track gives you a hint of where I’m going with the next one.

Who was responsible for the songwriting?

MR: Well, the vocalists wrote the lyrics and melody lines and I wrote the music. Dreams for Tomorrow was written by myself and Franky v/d Burgt who plays keyboards on the album also. There is only one song which I wrote lyrics for and that is called “Two Hearts” which features lyrics and vocals by Tony O’Hora. As you’ve noticed there are three instrumental tracks on the album. Those songs were supposed to get vocals on them too, but once the music was recorded it just didn’t felt like they needed vocals, since that would take away the strength of the songs, so I kept them instrumental. I’m especially proud of Toto’s Giant Journey since there is so much going on musically and the guys playing on the song are amazing!

Michael, please tell us something about your musical career so far?

MR: I’ve done many things. Played drums and guitar in various bands. During the recording of Fanfields, the Toto Tribute album I got in touch with a number of people who play on Shouting Silence which led to me playing for them as a session player on their records. I’ve done a fair amount of playing on advertisement tunes and such and now I have my solo carreer as well as playing drums in a band called Art.461, which is very cool so I get to play grooves. We’re currently recording our third album, but it’s not pure AOR, it’s rock with funk with sympho with blues with soul with pop, etc. Pretty neat songs.

Will there be a Promo-Tour for the album?

MR: Nope. I feel that to be able to get the feel of the songs across live I’d need to play with all the original musicians and that can’t be done I’m afraid (although, Tom of Perris Records, are you reading this? ;-) ).

Are there any future plans for another record, maybe a second allstar-album?  

MR: I get that question quite a lot lately, which I can understand. I want to focus on promoting Shouting Silence right now and I’m certain there’ll be a second album. I have quite some cool options. I’m working on the upcoming Lec Zorn album as a player and doing the mixing of some tracks. I love to produce so a second Fanfields album could be an option, I have some offers to do some session work too and I want to play more live gigs too, so it’s hard to decide… Some people wanted me to join their band or to set up a new one, so maybe that will happen.
